Abstract

In hydro power plants, vibrations of high amplitude frequently appears due to the coupling phenomena between Von Karman vortex and natural vibration modes. These induced vibrations sometimes produce the earlier fatigue failure of
the stayvane. Stayvane vibrations in hydraulic turbines has been discussed in the literature by a lot of authors.
Nevertheless, at the design stage the phenomena is sometimes not being considering with enough accuracy. Some lack of data appears in the definition of some physical parameters that have an important influence in the behavior of the component. This paper discussed the correlation between numerical simulations and some measurements done in a hydro power plant. Some aspects of the problem such as added mass during the vibration phenomena, damping effect due to the water, boundary conditions assumed for the analysis, coupling between Von Karman vortex and the bending and torsional modes of the stayvane, are presented. Strain gages measurements on the stayvane are also analyzed.
