Abstract

In this work, we calculate the electric birefringence for a hinged bent rod macroion (BRM).
The BRM model is composed of two rod like macro ions of length L with a restoring force proportional to X, the bending angle at the hinge. The principal terms of the optical
polarizability tensor of the BRM with respect to the molecular coordinate system were obtained by adding up the optical polarizability tensors of each arm of the system. We calculate the BRM's electric polarizability tensor considering a mechanism where the electric polarizability of a rod-like macro ion, is proportional to the square of its length. To obtain the final expression of the electric birefringence, it is necessary to calculate the statistical averages over all conformations (variations of angle X) as well as over all spatial orientations and over alI velocities in the presence of the electric field. Through this approach, numerical calculations are carried out. Though the BRM model is quite simple, we have obtained and acceptable fitting between the theory and the experimental results.
