Abstract

This paper studies the effectiveness of different computational strategies which allow the determination of the axisymmetric normal modes of transversal vibration of circular and annular plates, with stepped thickness and with different boundary conditions. The Rayleigh-Ritz method with several trial functions is analyzed. It's concluded that in the case of annular plares the convergence is greatly improved by including a logarithmic term into the trial function. The comparison with the
eigenvalues obtained by means of a very efficient finite element code shows excellent agreement from an engineering point of view in all cases studied.
