Abstract

Convergence characteristics of a model for gravity flow of granular materials with cohesion and friction arc studied. The model represents a viscoplastic fluid, and a Newtonian-viscoplastic fluid. Thi, problems is highly non linear, in which the equivalent viscosity is a function of the second unvariant of the strain rate tensor, and of the pressure. For the viscoplastic fluid there are convergence problems, and the constitutive equation is not satisfied. Such problems are partially overcome by the introduction of an upper limit to the equivalent viscosity, thus leading to a Newtonian-viscoplastic fluid.
