Abstract

In this paper, we obtain results from commonly-used numerical engineering models
for open-channel flow in compound sections, and we compare it with a well-known analytical
solution and experimental data. This comparison is focused on lateral variation of depthmean
velocity in the flow direction. Two hydrodynamic models are used: a one-dimensional
(HEC – RAS) and a two-dimensional (RMA2) model. Through a special algorithm, the onedimensional
model can estimate the lateral distribution of depth-mean velocity. For a small
floodplain relative depth, the 1D-model fits better than the 2D-model; instead the 2D-model
fits better than the 1D-model when the floodplain relative depth is large. We highlights the
good performance of the analytical solution, that suggests its extension to more complex
geometries.
