Description of the Achilles cluster

  • The project was funded by the Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL) and the National Agency for Promotion of Science and Technology, through the Fund for Scientific and Technological Research (FONCYT) and the Modernization of Equipment (PME). Project Title: "Cluster del Litoral: Red laboratory for solving physical problems of mathematics applied to engineering".
  • Achilles is a Beowulf cluster of 64-bit type and is equipped with a server and 82 compute nodes.
  • The server is a processor dual quad core Intel Xeon E5335 of 2 GHz and 16 GB of RAM (400 MHz DDR), Gigabit Lan on board. The hard disk storage has 1 TBytes.
  • Each compute node consists of an Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 3 GHz and 2 GB of RAM (DDR 400 MHz), 3.0GHz Intel motherboards with onboard Gigabit Lan, a floppy disk drive 3.5 " , AGP video card and a power of 300 W with two fans.
  • The network equipment has two Gigabit Ethernet switches (1 Gbit / s) with 48 ports each (3Com Super Stack 3 Switch 3870).
  • The connection of the nodes is through copper cables certified Category 5E.
  • The power supply uses 4 UPS (APC brand, model XLI). There are 3 of 5 KVA and 1 of 8 KVA, giving a total electrical output of 22.5 KVA. Each has double conversion online, Web / SNMP management software, shut down, scalable runtime, automatic rerouting and swappable batteries.
  • Installation requirements also include six five-shelf racks reinforced each, in addition to thermal control equipment necessary to maintain the cluster at a temperature and humidity for their operation, in this case consists of two split air conditioners, one of 9000 BTU and two 18,000-BTU each.
  • The installed operating system is Linux version 2.6.24 (gcc version 4.3.0 20080428 (Red Hat 4.3.0-8) (GCC)) # 1 SMP Thu November 20 13:21 ARST 2008.
